By the Bay 2027

By the Bay 2027

Initiated by the Shire of Shark Bay in 2024, By the Bay is a creative development program for artists of any medium and level of professional experience who live in Gathaagudu/Shark Bay or hold a significant connection to it. The program was designed to encourage the creative industries in the Gascoyne, and to build the programming capacity of Denham’s stunning Rose de Freycinet Gallery.

Through a competitive application process six artists are selected each year to collaborate on an exhibition for the Gallery. Over several months they receive curatorial guidance, professional fees
and support to develop a new body of work exploring their relationship to this unique part of the world.

The second iteration of the project took place from late 2025 with the resulting exhibition showing at the Rose de Freycinet Gallery from July-September 2026. Representing a diverse range of artistic mediums, ages and cultural backgrounds, this second group of artists drew inspiration from the landscape and history of the Bay to showcase its exceptional and fragile landscape and ecology, experiment with locally-sourced materials, and push themselves to explore new creative ground.

September 2026, is the start of the third year of the program with a call out for expressions of interest for By the Bay 2027.
