Rose de Freycinet Gallery

The Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery & Visitor Centre’s Rose de Freycinet Gallery offers visitors an ever-changing range of local and travelling exhibitions in a large, dramatically lit exhibition space.

In addition to exhibitions, the Rose de Freycinet Gallery actively develops collections and partnership projects to enable broader engagement with the local community and visitors to the region.

The Rose de Freycinet Gallery is named in honor of Rose de Freycinet, who, in September 1817, embarked on the Uranie alongside her husband, disguised as a man until they departed from port. She became the first woman to document the three-year circumnavigation through a series of intimate letters that took the form of a diary.
Rose meticulously recorded life aboard the ship, her observations of the people and locations they encountered, the scientific endeavors of the expedition, as well as the dynamics between men and women. Additionally, she highlighted the work of artist Jacques Arago. With a keen eye for detail, she crafted vivid descriptions of the unusual and exotic places they explored.
Just as Rose saw and documented the beauty and detail of what she saw, our gallery exhibits beautiful works of Art for you to view for free.
