Artist Profile: Sofie Seyah

Sofie Seyah, a marine scientist turned artist, creates watercolour and ink illustrations from her home studio in Denham, Gathaagudu (Shark Bay). Her work is a unique fusion of scientific precision and creative expression, inviting viewers into a vibrant world inspired by her deep connection to the ocean.
For By the Bay, Sofie has stepped beyond her usual practice to explore printmaking and mixed media. Her new works draw on Shark Bay’s striking landforms — red sandstone, birridas, and Tamala limestone — using layered techniques to echo the region’s natural processes of erosion, sedimentation, and time. “Much like the iron oxide quartz sands, blown by strong easterly winds over millennia, or the rich marine deposits left when sea levels were higher, this landscape is formed from the resources available – much like the art supplies of an artist living in remote Western Australia.” — Sofie Seyah, 2025
